I was really excited when making these shoes for the first time. It was for my friend’s nephew who was just born. It was a good few years ago but I still remember how proud I was when I made these.

These fondant baby shoes are not that difficult to make but you will need a bit of patience. If you are using just fondant then I suggest you will make them at least a week ahead because they need to set which takes time. You want these fondant shoes to be rock hard (or as hard as possible). You don’t want to end up with shoes that lose their shape once the paper kitchen towels (that support the shoes from the inside) are taken out.

Note:
Many people use Tylo powder. Tylo powder is added to the fondant and this will make the fondant set way faster. You could use this as well to speed up the drying process. I have never used it so I don’t know how fast it sets the fondant.

But let’s talk about how to make these fondant baby shoes and also what you’ll need in order to make them! Now if you scroll down a bit you will see a video tutorial that will help you visualize the whole process.

What you will need to make this fondant baby shoes topper:

  • Baby Shoe Template (see the picture below)
  • Pink Fondant
  • Baby Blue Fondant
  • Rolling Pin
  • Knife
  • Paint Brush
  • Stitching Effect Tool
  • Flower Plunge Cutters
  • Paper Kitchen Towels (to support the shoe from the inside)
  • Water
  • + Icing Sugar (Powdered Sugar) for Dusting

Substitutions:
I always try to include simple substitutions for most of the tools because if you are like myself then you probably want to try make something but are put off by the long list of expensive tools needed to make it. And because I don’t want you to be put off or disappointed I made a list of tools that could be substituted for other (cheaper or easily-available-in-your-home) options.

Hopefully this will help you make this baby shoes cake topper!

Paint Brush
Use your finger or lightly dab a piece of kitchen paper towel in water (don’t soak it).

Rolling Pin
If you really have no rolling pin, try to find a bottle without any label.

Stitching Effect Tool
A toothpick, a skewer or a sharp point tool work perfectly here.

Flower Plunge Cutters
Use any cutters you have available. Just make sure they are not too big for the shoes.

Icing Sugar
If you don’t have icing sugar, use corn flour for dusting. It will work just fine.

      Hi Mabel,

Thanks for the nice words. This is a cake topper so it shouldn’t be very small but I think too big wouldn’t look too good either. I suggest to have the sole of the shoe somewhere between 7-9 cm long(3-3.5 inch). If you print out the template provided, it should be about the same size.

I think you can print out the template in a smaller size too. Also you can simply click on the template and put a sheet of transparent paper/baking paper over your PC screen and simply outline the template. It looks roughly the size that could be ok for cupcakes. However, I am not sure if it will be easy to make. You may need a lot of patience – making them in such small size can be a challenge! :) Good luck!

Hi Bena. Did you click on the picture to download and print? The size of the shoe is 8 cm/3-inches in length. If you want it larger than that, you could cut out the template sightly larger to get a bigger size. Hope this helps.
